A cross-country move goes smoothly when the work is spread over two months instead of crammed into two weekends. Use this timeline as your master list.
8 weeks out: decide and declutter
- Set your moving budget and target dates.
- Go room by room and decide what is coming with you. Sell or donate the rest.
- Request written estimates and check each mover’s USDOT number.
- Start a folder, paper or digital, for every moving document.
6 weeks out: book and notify
- Choose your mover and confirm dates in writing.
- Tell your landlord, or confirm closing dates with your agent.
- Request school, medical, dental and veterinary records.
- Order packing supplies if you are packing yourself.
4 weeks out: start packing
- Pack what you rarely use: seasonal clothes, books, decor, guest rooms.
- Label every box with its room and a short contents list.
- File your change of address with USPS.
- Arrange to transfer or cancel utilities, internet and subscriptions.
- Reserve elevators and parking at both addresses if needed.
2 weeks out: confirm the details
- Reconfirm dates, addresses and phone numbers with your move coordinator.
- Update your address with banks, insurers, your employer and the DMV for your new state.
- Use up frozen and perishable food.
- Set aside items the movers cannot take. See what movers will not move.
- Refill prescriptions and gather valuables you will carry yourself.
The final week
- Finish packing everything except daily essentials.
- Pack a first-night box: bedding, towels, chargers, basic tools, toiletries, a few dishes.
- Defrost and dry the freezer at least 24 hours before loading.
- Drain fuel from mowers and disconnect appliances.
- Take photos of valuable furniture and electronics.
Moving day
- Walk the crew leader through the home and point out fragile items.
- Check the inventory as items are loaded, then read the bill of lading before you sign it.
- Do a final walk-through of every room, closet and cabinet.
- Keep your documents, medications and valuables with you.
Delivery day
- Check items off the inventory as they come in and note any damage on the paperwork before signing.
- Direct boxes to the right rooms using your labels.
- Assemble beds first so everyone sleeps well on night one.
