Local moves finish in a day. Long-distance moves work differently, and understanding the delivery window ahead of time removes most of the stress.

Why you get a window instead of a single date

Federal safety rules limit how many hours a driver may be behind the wheel each day. Weather, traffic, weigh stations and other pickups or deliveries on the same route all affect arrival. For that reason, movers give a delivery spread: a first and last possible day. Your bill of lading will state the agreed dates.

What affects transit time

Options if you need a firm date

If you have to be in by a specific day, ask about guaranteed or expedited delivery and exclusive use of a truck. These cost more because the truck runs only for you, but they turn a window into a date.

How to live comfortably during the gap

  1. Pack suitcases as if for a two-week trip: clothing, medication, chargers, important papers.
  2. Bring an air mattress, bedding, a few kitchen basics and a tool kit in your car.
  3. Keep work equipment and school supplies with you.
  4. Ask your coordinator how you will receive updates and who to call with questions.
If your new home is not ready: storage-in-transit lets the mover hold your shipment and deliver when you are. Read how storage-in-transit works.

What if delivery is late?

If your shipment is not delivered within the dates on your bill of lading, contact the mover right away. Keep receipts for reasonable expenses caused by the delay, and ask about the mover’s delay claim process.
