When you move matters almost as much as how far. The calendar affects price, how early you need to book, and what the weather will do to your plans.
Summer: most popular, most competitive
About May through September is peak season. School is out, the weather is predictable and home sales close. The trade-off is higher demand, which means higher rates and less date flexibility. If you are moving in summer, book six to eight weeks ahead, or more.
Fall: the sweet spot
Late September through November often brings mild weather, more open dates and lower demand. For households without a school calendar to work around, fall is frequently the best balance.
Winter: the best availability
December through February is the slowest period for movers, so scheduling is easiest. Build in extra time for snow and ice on northern routes, protect floors from wet boots, and keep walkways clear for the crew.
Spring: good value, growing demand
March and April are generally easier to book than summer. Demand climbs quickly as May approaches, so earlier in spring is better.
The best days within any month
- Mid-month is calmer than the first and last week, when leases begin and end.
- Tuesday through Thursday is usually easier to book than a weekend.
- Avoid holiday weekends if you can. Roads are busier and schedules are tight.
| Season | Availability | Demand | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | Limited | Highest | Heat, early booking deadlines |
| Fall | Good | Moderate | School schedules |
| Winter | Best | Lowest | Snow, ice, holidays |
| Spring | Good | Rising | Rain, late-spring rush |
If you have no choice of date
Most people move when a job or closing date tells them to. In that case the single most useful thing you can do is book early. Tell us your preferred date and we will show you what is available.
