Closings slip, leases overlap and renovations run long. Storage-in-transit exists for the gap between leaving one home and being able to move into the next.

What storage-in-transit is

Storage-in-transit, often shortened to SIT, is temporary storage arranged by your mover as part of the move. Your shipment is unloaded into a warehouse, held, and then delivered to your new home when you are ready. Your goods stay under the same contract and inventory from pickup to final delivery.

How it differs from self-storage

Storage-in-transit Self-storage
Who handles the goods The moving crew You, or movers you hire separately
Access during storage By appointment, often with a fee Whenever the facility is open
Paperwork One contract and inventory Separate rental agreement
Best for Short gaps between homes Long-term or frequent access

How it is priced

Storage charges are typically based on the weight of your shipment and the length of time it is held, plus warehouse handling in and out and the final delivery from the warehouse. Ask for each of these to be listed on your estimate.
